The Residents Registration Office or Citizens' Office is responsible for receiving the application and issuing the German identity card.
Application and fees Application: Must be submitted in person, as your signature and fingerprints will be recorded. Appointment: We strongly recommend booking an appointment online in advance at the Citizens' Office to avoid waiting times. Validity: The period of validity varies depending on the age of the applicant (e.g., 10 years from the age of 24, 6 years under the age of 24) . Fees: The current fees must be paid at the time of application (cash or card payment possible). Required documents Please bring the following documents with you to your appointment: Old document: Your previous identity card, passport, or child's passport (even if it has expired). Photograph: A current biometric passport photo (not older than six months). Birth certificate: For first-time issuance or if the previous document is not available. Collection of the document Duration: Processing by the Federal Printing Office usually takes approx. 3 to 6 weeks. Notification: You will receive written notification (PIN letter) directly from the Federal Printing Office as soon as the document is ready for collection. Collection: Collection must also be made in person at the Citizens' Office. Objective: To ensure that citizens are provided with valid identity documents in a timely manner.
