Housing allowance is a government social benefit designed to provide financial relief to citizens with low incomes to help them cover their housing costs. It is granted as a subsidy and does not have to be repaid.
1. Types of housing allowance It is distinguished according to the type of housing situation: Rent subsidy: For tenants of an apartment or a room. Burden allowance: For owners of a self-used house or condominium. 2. Eligibility requirements Eligibility for housing allowance depends on three key factors: Income: The total monthly income must be below a certain limit. Rent/Burden: The amount of monthly rent or ownership costs. Household size: The number of household members to be considered. Note: Recipients of citizen’s allowance or BAföG are generally excluded from housing allowance, as housing costs are already included in these benefits. 3. Application and responsibility Responsibility: The application must be submitted to the responsible local housing allowance office of the municipality or district. Required documents: Completed application form (for rent or burden allowance) Proof of total household income (e.g., pay slips) Proof of monthly rent or ownership costs Duration: Housing allowance is usually granted for twelve months. A new application is required afterward. Objective: To ensure adequate and family-appropriate housing for citizens with low income.
