Parental allowance is a government benefit that working parents receive after the birth of a child. It is intended to enable them to care for their child and to ease the financial burden during this period.
1. Who is eligible for parental allowance? Parents are eligible if they: Have their residence or habitual abode in Germany. Personally care for and raise their child after birth. Do not work full-time during this period (maximum 32 hours per week). Do not exceed a certain total income before the child’s birth. 2. Types and amount of parental allowance The amount of parental allowance is based on the average net income before birth: Basic parental allowance: Paid for a maximum of 12 months (or 14 months in case of partnership months). The amount is usually 65% to 67% of previous net income. Parental allowance Plus: Can be received for up to twice as long (maximum 24 months), with monthly payments halved. Ideal for parents working part-time. Partnership bonus: Additional months can be claimed if both parents work part-time simultaneously. 3. Application and deadlines Deadline: Parental allowance can only be paid retroactively for the last three months of the child’s life. It should therefore be applied for promptly after birth. Responsibility: Applications must be submitted to the responsible parental allowance office of the respective federal state. Required documents: Child’s birth certificate, proof of income before birth, and if applicable proof of maternity benefits. Objective: To ensure the livelihood of parents who reduce or pause their employment after the birth to care for their child.
