The child supplement is a government benefit designed to provide financial support to low-income families. It is intended to ensure that parents can meet their own needs and those of their children and do not have to rely on citizen's income (formerly unemployment benefit II).
1. Who is eligible for KiZ? Income: Parents are eligible if their income is sufficient for their own living expenses but insufficient or barely enough to support their children. Child Benefit: Eligibility applies only for children for whom child benefit is received. Age Limit: The benefit is paid until the child’s 25th birthday, provided the child is unmarried and does not live in their own household. 2. Amount and Duration Maximum Amount: The child supplement is paid per child monthly at a fixed amount (maximum). Income Assessment: The child’s own income (e.g., maintenance payments) is partially offset against the child supplement. Duration: KiZ is usually granted for six months. A new application must be submitted afterward. 3. Application and Responsibility Responsibility: The application must be submitted to the responsible family benefits office. Documents: Proof of living situation, income, children, and child benefit amount must be provided. Advantage: Families receiving KiZ automatically gain access to benefits from the Education and Participation Package (BuT). Objective: To support low-income families and prevent dependence on basic social security benefits.
